Arizona State Standards

DeMiguel Elementary aligns its curriculum with Arizona’s K‑12 Academic Standards, ensuring students receive instruction in core areas such as English Language Arts, mathematics, science, social studies, physical education, and health—all guided by frameworks developed and maintained by the Arizona Department of Education. This means every lesson is designed to help students meet or exceed state benchmarks, preparing them for success in school, college, and beyond.

Elementary Preparatory Academy at DeMiguel

DeMiguel Elementary hosts the Flagstaff Unified School District’s Elementary Preparatory Academy – a "school within a school" that enriches gifted and high-achieving students with advanced academic experiences while still engaging in all campus-wide programs. Through this program, students access specialized learning opportunities and resources alongside their peers, fostering both academic growth and a sense of community.

Gifted and Talented Education at DeMiguel

DeMiguel Elementary supports gifted and high-achieving students through a variety of programs, including the Elementary Preparatory Academy. These opportunities provide advanced academic experiences while keeping students fully engaged in campus-wide activities. Students benefit from specialized curriculum and resources alongside their peers, fostering both academic growth and a strong sense of community.

    FUSD Developmental Preschool Programs:
    FUSD Developmental Preschool programs are set up to serve a majority of students with special needs, focusing on readiness skills such as social-emotional skills, adaptive skills, and cognitive skills to be ready for learning at school. A few students who attend the program are typically developing and pay monthly tuition.

    Inclusion Preschool Programs:
    FUSD Inclusion Preschool programs are set up to serve a majority of students who are typically developing, focusing on readiness and academic skills to prepare students for kindergarten, while supporting a smaller number of students who have special education needs. A majority of the students who attend the program are typically developing and pay monthly tuition.

  • Welcome to Kindergarten!

    Thank you for visiting! We are so excited to partner with you during this very special first year of school. We encourage you to visit each teacher’s individual site as well to stay connected and see all the wonderful learning happening in our Kindergarten classrooms!

    Throughout your child’s Kindergarten year, they will build the essential foundations that set the stage for lifelong learning. Kindergarten is a year of tremendous growth – academically, socially, and emotionally. Your child will begin their journey as a reader and writer, develop strong number sense, explore science and social studies concepts, and learn how to be a responsible and confident member of our school community.

    Below you will find a list of skills and concepts your child will learn throughout Kindergarten based on the Common Core Standards. These are the foundational skills your child will be expected to know by the end of the year according to our Standards Report Card.


    Reading & Writing

    • Your child will learn to recognize and name all uppercase and lowercase letters.
    • Your child will identify and produce letter sounds and begin blending sounds together to read simple words.
    • Your child will read common high-frequency (sight) words and begin reading simple patterned and decodable books.
    • Your child will practice listening to stories and retelling them, including key details such as characters and setting.
    • Your child will begin writing letters, words, and simple sentences using phonetic spelling.
    • Your child will draw, label, and write to share ideas, stories, and information.
    • Most importantly, your child will develop a love of books, stories, and learning to read!

    Mathematics

    • Your child will build strong number sense by counting to 100 by ones and tens.
    • Your child will identify, read, write, and represent numbers to 20.
    • Your child will compare numbers and understand concepts such as greater than, less than, and equal to.
    • Your child will add and subtract within 10 using objects, drawings, and equations.
    • Your child will identify and describe two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes.
    • Your child will sort, classify, and create simple graphs.
    • Your child will use problem-solving strategies to solve real-world math problems in meaningful ways.

    Science & Social Studies

    • Your child will explore the world around them through observation, questioning, and hands-on investigations.
    • They will learn about weather, seasons, plants, animals, and basic needs of living things.
    • Your child will begin to understand community roles, rules, and responsibilities.
    • They will develop curiosity and critical thinking skills as they ask questions and make discoveries.

    We are excited for all the amazing growth your Kindergartener will experience this year! Kindergarten is a time of building confidence, independence, and a strong academic foundation. We encourage you to talk with your child each day about what they are learning, read together nightly, practice letters and sounds, count everyday objects, and celebrate their progress—big and small!

  • Welcome to 1st Grade!

    Thank you for visiting!  We welcome you to also visit each teachers' individual site as well to see what is happening within each 1st Grade classroom!

    Throughout your child's First Grade year, they will learn many amazing things that will promote them as readers, writers, give them the basic foundations within mathematics, and allow them to explore history and their curiosity of science.  Below you will find a list of items within various academic categories that your child will learn throughout First Grade based on the Common Core Standards.  These are items that your child will also be expected to know by the end of First Grade based off of our Standards Report Card.

     

    Reading & Writing

    • Your child will read a first grade passage with accuracy and fluency while making predictions and comprehending the meaning of the passage.
    • Your child will be able to retell a first grade passage including characters, setting, main idea, which includes who, what, when, where, and why.
    • Your child will be able to read the first 250 high-frequency (commonly-used) words, as well as, being able to spell the words correctly within their writing.
    • Your child will write a simple story that has a beginning, middle and end, along with proper use of capitalization, grammar, and punctuation.
    • Your child will be able to define vocabulary words from stories, identify compound words, contractions and rhyming words.
    • Most importantly, your child will LOVE to read all the amazing pieces of literature they will be exposed to!

    Mathematics

    • Your child will have a wonderful time exploring the basic foundations of mathematics throughout the school year!
    • Your child will be able to interpret graphs, understand probability, tell time, and identify money.
    • Your child will identify place value to 120, identify, read, write and order whole numbers through 120.
    • Your child will be able to add and subtract numbers from 0-20, and they will also add and subtract two-digit numbers.
    • Your child will use problem solving techniques to help them solve word problems.

    Reading and Writing

    • Read the first 300 high-frequency words
    • Read 2nd-grade materials accurately, fluently, and with expression
    • Follow written, multi-step directions
    • Increase understanding and use of the writing process
    • Spell high-frequency words correctly
    • Use writing for various purposes

     

    Math

    • Order whole numbers to 999
    • Tell time to the quarter hour
    • Know fast math facts for addition, subtraction, and multiplication
    • Create and label graphs
    • Use money values to $1
    • Add and subtract one- and two-digit numbers using regrouping

     

    Science

    • Predict and compare the results of science investigations/experiments

    What can I do to help my child learn?

    • Set up a quiet, well-lit area and regular time for homework
    • Limit time watching television and playing video games
    • Read to your child every day... or, better yet, let them read to you

    • Play games with your child that build reading, counting, and math skills

Third grade is a pivotal year as students transition from learning to read to reading to learn, while also strengthening independence, responsibility, and critical thinking skills. We encourage you to visit each teacher’s individual site to stay informed about classroom updates and learning experiences.

    Throughout your child’s Third Grade year, they will deepen their skills as readers, writers, and mathematicians while expanding their understanding of science and social studies.     Mathematics

    • Your child will understand place value through the thousands and round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100.
    • Your child will add and subtract within 1,000 using strategies and algorithms based on place value.
    • Your child will understand fractions as numbers and represent fractions on a number line.
    • Your child will compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator.
    • Your child will measure and estimate liquid volumes and masses and solve problems involving measurement.
    • Your child will understand concepts of area and relate area to multiplication and addition.
    • Your child will interpret and create bar graphs and scaled picture graphs.

    Science & Social Studies

    • Your child will engage in hands-on investigations and use evidence to support scientific thinking.
    • They will explore topics such as life cycles, ecosystems, forces and motion, and Earth systems.
    • In social studies, students will examine communities, geography, economics, and historical events that shape our world.
    • Students will develop research skills, analyze information, and communicate their understanding through discussion and writing.
