Gifted and Talented Education at DeMiguel
At DeMiguel Elementary, we are committed to nurturing excellence and supporting the full potential of our gifted learners. Our goal is to provide academic, social, and emotional opportunities that challenge students while honoring the diversity of individuals and cultures within our classrooms.
Our gifted education program uses differentiated instructional strategies tailored to meet each student’s needs. This may include acceleration, increased complexity and depth, tiered instruction, hands-on learning, creative projects, and independent study. Learning experiences are designed to foster independence, creativity, problem-solving, decision-making, and other executive thinking skills, helping students grow as thinkers, learners, and leaders.
One way we support gifted learners is through the Flagstaff Unified School District’s Elementary Preparatory Academy hosted at DeMiguel. This “school within a school” offers advanced, fast-paced instruction and specialized curriculum for students performing above grade level in Language Arts and at or above grade level in Mathematics. Students in the Academy also remain fully engaged in campus-wide programs, including recess, lunch, specials, and school activities, ensuring a balanced and connected experience.
Gifted students at DeMiguel are identified in alignment with the State of Arizona’s definition of giftedness as children whose advanced abilities or superior intellect require special instruction or services to achieve at levels commensurate with their potential. Our program also aligns with the federal Javits definition, supporting students who demonstrate higher performance capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, leadership, or academic achievement and who need specialized services to fully develop these talents.
Through these opportunities, DeMiguel Elementary ensures that gifted learners are challenged, supported, and inspired to reach their highest potential.
